Job Description

 

Title:                             Food Service ASSISTANT COOK

Reports to:                 Food Service Kitchen Manager

Function:                    Assist in preparing and serving meals for students and staff with a variety of good tasting, and nourishing food in an atmosphere of cleanliness, cheerfulness, and personal caring.

  DUTIES:

  1. Responsible for maintaining high standards of quality food production.
  2. Responsible for assisting in stocking and counting inventory from all vendors and commodities. Some heavy lifting, approximately 50lbs or less.
  3. Responsible for the cleanliness and safety of the Kitchen facilities.
  4. Attend in-service programs and meetings as scheduled.
  5. Assist in the preparation and serving of food and general cleanliness of the kitchen area. 
  6. Assist in lunch line and ala carte preparation.
  7. If assigned to serve, you must serve at the serving line during lunch time, in a fast paced environment, and assist with clean up.
  8. Responsible for helping with excessive cleaning on in-service, or any day without students.
  9. Organize and re-stock stockrooms, refrigerators, and freezers. You must be able to work in tight enclosed spaces, and cold/cool spaces.
  10. Assist in maintaining responsibilities of the kitchen, when the Manager is out of the building.
  11. Responsible for assisting in daily reports, and month end inventory as needed.
  12. Perform such other duties as from time to time may be assigned.
  13. Assist in the daily cleaning of all the kitchen equipment
  14. Assist the Head Cook with the meal preparation when time allows
  15. Follow rules, regulations and policies of the school lunch program
  16. Interact in a professional manner with staff, students and parents
  17. Maintain respect at all times for confidential information, e.g., free and reduced lunch students
  18. Report the inferior quality of food or faulty equipment to the appropriate supervisor
  19. Perform various tasks as assigned to you daily.  You will be asked to do one main job daily, but will be asked to help in other areas as needed
  20. Complete required Continuing Credit hours of training yearly when assigned
  21. Perform any other duties assigned by the Head Cook – various tasks may be assigned daily.  You may have one main job on a daily basis, but on occasion be asked to help in other areas as needed
  22. Cleaning of the kitchen area (mopping daily, excessive cleaning at the beginning and the end of the year, sanitizing, cleaning ovens with chemicals, keeping equipment clean, taking out trash, cleaning tables, and any other duties that the Head Cook assigns for the inspections of the health department)
  23. Agrees to perform such other duties as from time to time assigned such as: (cashier, ovens, dish room, server, cover for Head Cook)
  24. If assigned as a cashier you will be responsible for the following duties: receiving payments, balancing at the end of the day, trouble shooting your mistakes, ensure the appropriate paperwork goes to the central office and the bank, complete daily worksheets, follow all charging policies, determine and collect the correct amount of money from students, prepare your register daily as requested by the Food Service Director.
  25. Help assist in preparing production sheets and completing production sheets at the end of the day
  26. Help assist in the ordering of GFS and Commodities
  27. Help assist in the inventory of GFS and Commodities

 QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  2. One to two years related experience preferred

 REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  1. Complete Continuing Education Hours of training as assigned by Food Service Director.  There is a minimum amount of hours required by the government yearly.  These hours of Continuing education be done throughout the year.  There will be 2 mandatory days before school starts that each employee will be required to work.  There will be training done on these days, and setting up the cafeterias for the 1st day of school.  You will be required to work the hours asked of you from your Director, and or Head Cook. 
  2. Ability to follow recipes
  3. Ability to read and understand verbal and written instructions, written warnings, and labels
  4. Ability to work effectively with others
  5. Ability to cook in large quantities
  6. Organizational skills and problem solving skills
  7. Ability to work independently

 EQUIPMENT TO OPERATE:

  1. Can Opener
  2. Conventional Oven/Steamer/Stove
  3. Dishwasher
  4. Knives
  5. Microwave
  6. Mixer
  7. Slicer

 ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. Frequent excessive standing during assigned workday
  2. Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue
  3. Occasional interaction with unruly children
  4. Requirement to lift, carry, push, and pull various items up to maximum of 50 pounds, or 300 pounds on wheels. 
  5. Frequent requirement to stand, walk, talk, see, reach, stretch with hands and arms, kneel, climb, bend, stoop, and balance.
  6. Frequent repetitive hand motion. (e.g. , cutting, grinding)
  7. Occasional overtime work will be requested and expected to get the job done if needed. This could mean working different hours as normal, or working overtime as needed.  At the end of the school year you will be required to work any extra time to clean up the kitchens for the summer.
